Scotty MC; the man, the myth, the legend, the BS
It all started back in high school when I was attending a demonstration on radioactivity at a local
science exhibit. A spider that had found its way in got too close to the equipment and became
irradiated. As it fell from its webline, it landed on my hand and bit me just before dying. Somehow it
transfered its energy and abilities to me and I gained the proportionate speed, strength, and agility
of the arachnid. In essence, I became a human spider!
Now wait, scratch that...

Well, what can I say? I have been really into music for as long as I can remember.
Even to this day "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals still gives me as many chills as it did when I was 5.
At 8 years old, I clearly remember being mesmerized by the drum solo from "Jump into the Fire" by Harry Nillson
(R.I.P.). From that day on I begged my folks for a drum set but they wouldn't go for it.
I finally gave up after 5 years and at age 14 I started getting into Rush and decided I wanted
to play bass. After writing song lyrics for 5 years I decided I needed to put them to music so at 18,
I bought myself a cheap keyboard and taught myself how to play simple melodies and bass lines. After
hooking up with a friend from work who played guitar, I taught myself to play drums on his brother's kit
and we formed a short-lived band where I played drums and another friend of ours played bass. I had
also learned how to play a little guitar and bass while having practice and jam sessions. The band soon
broke up when the bassist moved away and the guitarist's brother came back home from school and
re-claimed his throne. He was much better drummer than me anyway!
In 1990, I finally bought myself a bass and a 30-watt amp and moved to Austin
to attend UT and get serious with my music. I was writing more and more songs and my bass ability
grew quickly because I spent more time with it then I did with my books. I got myself a guitar in
1994 to help my songwritng move along and also got my own drums (finally!!) later that year.
I've already bored you to tears with the history of Oddjob, (click here if I haven't!)
so let's hit fast forward to May 1998.
Out of the ashes of a band bonfire that layed waste to a three-year old punk-pop power trio known
as Provocative Elbow and a funky-soul ensemble called Moonstone, the phoenix rose and Oddjob was born!
The band played for six months until our drummer, Jimmy, flaked on us. We began the search for a new
one but that was cut short when Jeremy and Bill decided they wanted to move to Boston.
Wasting no time, I began the painstaking search for a new group and ran into Bret, the original
drummer for Provocative Elbow and briefly, Oddjob. Turns out the group he was in needed a bass player.
I jumped on board and became part of Veronika. After working with them for a few months it was evident
that things weren't really working out and Bret and I parted ways with them and decided to resurrect
Oddjob! After our recon mission, we drafted local guitar god Reese Perkins to handle the six-string
duties and Blake Naranjo to deliver the delicious vocal goods. After Blake left in late January Y2K,
we searched high and low for a replacement to sail on board our ship of fools and in the meantime, we
remained a power trio for about six months. After much struggling and juggling, we decided to call it quits
and Reese, Bret, and I all moved on to other projects. After that, I hooked up with Jason Smith and Barry Welch
to form BAG, which lasted from 2000-2003. Click here
to check out the site.
On a side note, I started my publishing company/record label, Thought Provoking Music, in March of '96
to handle the business side of my music and in August of '99 I launched my on-line music magazine,
SMaCk!! which ended in March '00.
